The new Gustav Mahler exhibition at the Musée d’Orsay opened this week in Paris.

The exhibition shows a fascinating collection of material from the archives of the Gesellschaft der Musikfreunde in Vienna and the Médiathèque Musicale Mahler in Paris. Many of the objects are on display for the first time ever.

The centrepiece of the exhibition is a facsimile of the complete manuscript score of the 4th Symphony. As the music plays from loudspeakers (Jascha Horenstein’s 1970 recording with the London Symphony Orchestra) lights illuminate the relevant page in the score.

Curator Pierre Korzilius spoke to Universal Edition about the exhibition.

The exhibition is on until 29 May 2011.

Mahler Manuscripts Online

Norman Lebrecht and Alex Ross report that the manuscript of Mahler’s Fifth Symphony is now online at the Morgan Library website.

On the occasion of Mahler’s 150th birthday a Gustav Mahler anthology has now been published in Italian. Thanks to the comments of those who admired and respected him, the anthology plays a valuable role in keeping his spirit alive.

Mahler opens the BBC Proms

Gustav Mahler’s 8th Symphony, the “Symphony of a Thousand”, opens the 2010 BBC Proms tonight. Jiří Bělohlávek conducts the BBC Symphony Orchestra and the joint forces of six choirs.

The concert will be broadcast live on BBC Radio 3 at 20:00 British Summer Time (21:00 in Paris). Listen online.

Gustav Mahler snatched Alma under the noses of Vienna’s artistic elite, but ten years of marriage and the death of one child have exacerbated the strains caused by the 19 year gap in their ages, and Mahler’s refusal to allow Alma to write music (“I need a wife, not a colleague”). While staying at a spa resort, Alma falls in love with Walter Gropius, five years her junior. Tormented, Mahler seeks advice from Sigmund Freud. The encounter of the two giants of music and psychoanalysis is bumpy, temperamental, and not without humor.

Mahler Exhibition in Vienna

It is with these words that the Austrian Theatre Museum has titled its new exhibition on the life and music of Gustav Mahler, celebrating his 150th birthday. The exhibition was curated by Reinhold Kubik und Thomas Trabitsch, in cooperation with Universal Edition.

Visitors to the exhibition can view all 15 video interviews with conductors which were made for this blog.

The exhibition runs until 3 October 2010.

AUSSCHREIBUNG: Mahler-Kompositionswettbewerb 2010/11

In Zusammenarbeit mit der Internationalen Gustav Mahler Gesellschaft, dem ORF-Radio-Symphonieorchester Wien und dem Wiener Konzerthaus schreibt der Österreichische Komponistenbund aus Anlass der Mahlerjahre 2010/11 (150. Geburtstag, 100. Todestag) einen internationalen Kompositionswettbewerb aus, der Komponistinnen und Komponisten des 21. Jahrhunderts ohne Altersbegrenzung einlädt, Werke in jenen drei Kategorien einzureichen, für die Gustav Mahler Kompositionen geschaffen hat:

A. Klavierlied
Dauer: Es können bis maximal 4 Lieder eingereicht werden, keine größeren Zyklen!
Besetzung: Alt, Klavier
Einreichfrist: 31. Dezember 2009

B. Klavierquartett
Dauer: max. 20 Minuten Besetzung: Violine, Viola, Violoncello und Klavier Einreichfrist: 31. März 2010

C. Orchester
Max. Besetzung: 3/3/3/3, 4/4/3/1, 1 Pauker, 3 Schlagzeuger, 1 Harfe, 14/12/10/8/6 (Holzbläser inkl. Nebeninstrumente!)
Einreichfrist: 30. September 2010
Dauer: max. 15 min

UA des Siegerwerks: 25. März 2011 im Wiener Konzerthaus im Rahmen eines RSO-Konzerts mit dessen Chefdirigenten Cornelius Meister. Das zweit- und drittgereihte Orchesterwerk wird vom ORF produziert werden.

Auswahlverfahren/Preisvergabe:
Eine international besetzte Jury wird in den einzelnen Kategorien jeweils 3 Preise vergeben. Die ausgewählten Werke dieses Wettbewerbs sollen in möglichst vielen “Mahler-Städten” zusammen mit ausgewählten Beispielen aus Gustav Mahlers Œuvre zum Erklingen gebracht werden. Da die prämierten Werke von internationalen renommierten Künstlern wie Marjana Lipovöek uraufgeführt werden, bzw. bei den Orchesterwerken vom RSO Wien, gelangen bei diesem Wettbewerb keine Preisgelder zur Vergebung.

Einreichbedingungen:
Es ist kein konkreter Mahler-Bezug gefordert, allerdings sollten die ausgewählten Werke in Anlehnung an Mahlers Modernität und seinen weit reichenden Einfluss auf die Musikentwicklung des 20. Jahrhunderts im besten Sinne innovativ und in die Zukunft blickend gestaltet sein. Die Einreichung eines oder mehrerer Werke(s) hat in der Weise anonym zu erfolgen, dass der/die UrheberIn des eingereichten Werkes auf der Partitur nicht erkennbar ist, jedoch in einem verschlossenen Kuvert seinen/ihren Namen, Anschrift, Telefonnummer und E-Mail-Adresse sowie künstlerischen Lebenslauf (inkl. Foto) bekannt gibt. Sowohl das eingereichte Werk als auch das angeschlossene Kuvert sind daher mit einem gleichlautenden Kennwort zu versehen.
