Naxos USA have informed us of the release of the new recording of Mahler’s Symphony No. 2 with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra conducted by Bernard Haitink.

This week’s Building a Library programme from BBC Radio 3 concerns itself with Mahler’s Lied von der Erde.

Stephen Johnson examins the available recordings of Das Lied von der Erde and makes his own personal recommendation.

Arbiter Records have released a CD of a live recording of Oskar Fried conducting Von der Schönheit from Das Lied von der Erde in 1936 (with Astra Desmond, alto, and the BBC Symphony Orchestra).

Fried’s relationship with Mahler is outlined in the comprehensive liner notes.
